Education Committee Update
The Iowa Nurses Association (INA) Education Committee has been actively planning engaging educational opportunities for members, including quarterly virtual town halls and the upcoming 2025 Fall Conference. A recent virtual town hall featured The American Nurses Association (ANA), Drs. Ann Munana and Lucia Wocial, both contributors to the 2025 revision of the ANA Code of Ethics. Their presentation focused on the evolving ethical role of nurses and introduced Provision 10, which emphasizes global health engagement.

Spotlight on Provision 10: A Global Vision for Nursing Ethics
In 2025, the American Nurses Association introduced Provision 10 to the Code of Ethics for Nurses, affirming the profession’s ethical responsibility to engage in the global health community. Provision 10 states: “Nursing, through organizations and associations, participates in the global nursing and health community to promote human and environmental health, well-being, and flourishing.”
This addition reflects the growing recognition that health is a global concern. From climate change and pandemics to migration and health inequities, nurses are increasingly called to lead across borders. Provision 10 acknowledges the interconnectedness of human and environmental health and positions nurses as ethical stewards of planetary well-being.
The inclusion of Provision 10 marks a shift from a sole national focus to a global ethical framework. It encourages nurses to engage in international partnerships, advocate for sustainable healthcare systems, and promote equity in underserved populations. It also reinforces the importance of cultural humility, solidarity, and reciprocity in global health work.
For nursing organizations, Provision 10 is a call to action: to create opportunities for global engagement, support international collaboration, and prepare nurses to lead in a rapidly changing world. Whether through exchange programs, policy advocacy, or community-based initiatives, nurses now have a clear ethical mandate to think globally and act locally.
Nurses are not only caregivers—they are catalysts for global transformation. As we embrace Provision 10 and the promise of change, let us lead with courage, compassion, and conviction. Together, we are shaping a healthier, more just, and sustainable world—one nurse, one voice, one vision at a time.
