ANA-NY Health Equity Task Force Update

The ANA-NY Health Equity Task Force is sponsoring a 4-part virtual series on “Strategies and Skills to Broaden Inclusive Communication in Healthcare”. Task Force members worked with Northwell Health Trainer Alice Fornari to customize this successful program into four sessions (2 CE each) for ANA-NY members. May 13, 2025; 6:30pm-8:30 pm

Session 1: Explore the concepts of unconscious bias, privilege, safe and brave spaces as you learn best practices to support psychological safety. A look at historical discrimination in nursing and healthcare will inform strategies and practice of inclusive language.

June 10, 2025; 6:30pm-8:30 pm

Session 2: A discussion of the 4 types of historical discrimination will inform the groups sharing examples from one’s practice and reflection on how past prejudices still exist in medicine today. A focus on stereotypes, stereotype threat, and imposter syndrome supports learning how to identify risk factors associated with imposter syndrome and use of a tool to diagnose it.

July 15, 2025; 6:30pm-8:30 pm

Session 3: Learning the difference between impact versus intent of communication and behavior will empower participants to differentiate shame, guilt, humiliation, and embarrassment and reflect on different responses. Describing the bystander effect and ways to overcome it will support participant’s practice the 5 D’s of Bystander Intervention. Exploration of behaviors to support ALLYSHIP provides learners with the opportunity to commit to a SMART goal for allyship.

August 5, 2025; 6:30pm-8:30 pm

Session 4: Participants continue to learn strategies and skills including how to rebound, move beyond feelings of guilt and shame to practice a meaningful apology in the setting of a microaggression. Brené Brown’s 4-step process supports participants practice of specific strategies to build resilience. A discussion of microaggressions, their impact and the difference between ‘Calling in’ vs ‘Calling out’ is supported by using role play to practice interrupting a microaggression using strategies from the ACTION Model. To close, participants will review the topics and skills from the 4-part series and celebrate their growth.
