LEGENDARY LEADER: Mary Seacole

By: Carol OMeara, RN, MS

This quarter, we continue a series of articles from the Colorado Nurses Foundation honoring the legacy of nursing leaders who have defied racism and paved the way for underrepresented nurses. In February 2026, the Watson Caring Institute Newsletter carried a wonderful tribute to Mary Seacole. They have graciously given us permission to reprint it here.

In honor of Black History Month, we celebrate the legacy of Mary Seacole (1805 – 1881), a true pioneer of holistic care and a beacon of resilience for nurse advocates everywhere. Long before modern medicine embraced the “whole person” approach, Seacole was integrating hygiene, ventilation, hydration, and herbal remedies with deep emotional empathy at her “British Hotel” during the Crimean War. Despite facing systemic racism and being repeatedly denied official nursing roles, she remained undeterred, proving that the heart of nursing lies in the commitment to the patient rather than the permission of an institution.

The Colorado Nurses Foundation joins the Watson Caring Institute in honoring Mary Seacole, a true Legendary Leader.
