This month’s continuing nurse education article provides a pharmacologic update on oral anticoagulants. Many new medications are available, and this article offers insight into their pharmacokinetics, adverse effects, contraindications, and drug-to-drug interactions. This issue also includes the second part of two articles whose first parts were featured in the May issue. The first, on procedural sedation, reviews sedation monitoring and airway obstruction identification along with an algorithm for airway management. The second of the two-parters is on central line–associated bloodstream infections—prevention and what to do when an infection occurs.

Other clinical articles in this issue include an update on acute flaccid myelitis and a rapid response scenario about acute cardiogenic pulmonary edema. You’ll also want to read the feature on central vs. de-centralized staffing as well as the articles on nurse-owned business and the focus section on nurse health coaching.
