As I reflect on my first year as executive director of the American Nurses Foundation (ANF), that motivation has guided both my thinking and the foundation’s actions. Nurses make up the largest segment of the U.S. healthcare profession, and they’ve been ranked the nation’s most trusted professionals for 24 years in a row. Yet the challenges facing nursing—from workforce shortages and burnout to health inequities and rapidly evolving technology—are substantial, and more than any one nurse or organization can address alone.
