I’m an ICU Nurse at a hospital that frequently procures organs from patients who’ve given consent to donate on their driver’s licenses. In some cases, organ procurement organizations (OPOs) proceed before a deceased patient’s family arrives. How do I balance a patient’s expressed wishes while also enabling their family to grieve and their donated organs to be procured appropriately?
