What is the Emergency Nurses Association?
The Emergency Nurses Association (ENA), an ANA organizational affiliate, is devoted to safe practice and safe care in emergency nursing. It was founded in 1970 by Anita Dorr, RN, and Judith C. Kelleher, RN, as a teaching and networking organization to serve the needs of emergency department nurses. Since then, the ENA has evolved into an authority, an advocate, a lobbyist, and a voice for emergency nurses. Today, the ENA has robust research and practice divisions, the ENA Injury Prevention Institute/ENCare, and the ENA Foundation. We also have a large catalog of nursing literature and products and a broad range of educational offerings. And we support the Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing.
How does the ENA promote high-quality patient care and professional growth?
The ENA is a leader in emergency nursing education, research, practice resources, and advocacy. With our Online Emergency Nursing Orientation, Trauma Nursing Core Curriculum, and our Leadership and Scientific annual conferences, the ENA promotes excellence in patient care and professional development for emergency nurses. As the national face of 50 state ENA organizations, the ENA works with all levels of government to promote patient safety, alleviate emergency department crowding, reduce violence in emergency departments, and promote increased funding for nursing education, trauma systems, and related activities.

More than 34,000 ENA members represent the spectrum of emergency nurses, including students, educators, staff nurses, and administrators with emergency nursing responsibilities.
How does the ENA communicate with members?
The ENA communicates through its website, www.ena.org, and its online newsletter, ENA Dateline. We also have two primary print vehicles. The Journal of Emergency Nursing, a peer-reviewed journal with original articles by experts, keeps emergency nurses in touch with current clinical practice and trends. The ENA Connection covers the latest on ENA activities, information on caring for various patient populations, injury prevention, emergency nursing certification, and news from across the industry.
