A few weeks ago, I was floated to the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU), which was seriously short-handed due to surgeries from a multiple-car accident. Trained in the OB/GYN specialty, I was asked to monitor changes in two patients, which was within my skill set. However, the surgeon for one patient rushed into the room, told me to remove the arterial line and send her back to her room. The surgeon dashed out before I could respond. Unsure of what to do and knowing this was beyond my expertise, I waited to remove it until a PACU nurse was free. Other staff members seemed annoyed by the delay. What should I have done?
